Perhaps the epitome of knowledge gone to waste in a believer relates to prayer. I can tell you why we should pray. You can probably tell me the theological implications. Probably listing off 5 reasons why we should pray, even if God's sovereign. I can tell you where it says we should pray in the bible. I can share the how, where, whys, etc of prayer. Yet..I dont pray!
Or atleast not in the way I know in my head I should. Scripture says to be 'devoted' to prayer, or 'constant' in prayer. Yet of course, I want to say "But its sooo hard...I want to...but I just can't". To this, I share John Piper's rebuke to me "Join the fallen humanity club. Its not easy for anyone to pray!" Ouch! Darn, I thought it was just me that had an extra hard time. Oh how much we Christians think this is a cakewalk. We fail to struggle, groan, and fight! Fight it! says Piper!
I'm not going to go further. I'm sure you've heard dozens of sermons on prayer. You've tried, and failed countless times to discipline yourself in this matter. Yet, all I can say is this, fight it!!! 100%! Don't let that percentage go down every time you fail. 95%....85%....60%....Where slowly..there is no fight left in you, and you are satisfied with....apathy... But persevere, get back up and try fight again, 100% Discipline yourself to pray. In that, i believe a deep passion will be formed. Keep on trying Brothers and Sisters. Work whats in your mind, into your heart...through prayer.
